College Football Playoff Predictions

By Casey Green 5/17/2026

The 12-team College Football Playoff has completely changed the landscape of college football. Recruiting depth, transfer portal success, and schedule strength now matter more than ever before. With another chaotic offseason behind us, several programs look primed to make a run at a national championship.

Here are my way-too-early playoff predictions heading into the 2026 college football season.

1. Ohio State

Ohio State once again enters the season as one of the most talented teams in the country. Despite falling short against Indiana in the Big Ten Championship and later losing to Miami in the playoff, the Buckeyes were dominant for most of last season.

While Ohio State lost several key contributors — including Carnell Tate, Caleb Downs, David Igbinosun, and both starting middle linebackers — they attacked the transfer portal and reloaded immediately. The addition of elite freshman receiver Chris Henry Jr. could give the Buckeyes another game-changing weapon offensively.

The biggest question will be quarterback Julian Sayin. If he takes the next step, Ohio State has the roster to compete for another national title and potentially run the table.

Pivotal Games

  • At Texas

  • At Indiana

  • vs Oregon

2. Indiana

Indiana has become one of the most fascinating stories in college football. The Hoosiers have completely embraced roster turnover through recruiting and the transfer portal, and it continues to pay off.

The losses of quarterback Fernando Mendoza and top receivers Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt will be significant, but Indiana responded by adding impact playmakers like Josh Hoover, Nick Marsh and Shazz Preston. Three returning starters on the offensive line should provide stability, while the defensive front has been reinforced through both recruiting and the portal.

Indiana may not have the same national brand as some of the teams around them, but the roster talent and development continue to improve every season.

Pivotal Games

  • vs Ohio State

  • At Michigan

  • vs USC

3. BYU

BYU came painfully close to a playoff appearance last season, with two losses to Texas Tech ultimately keeping the Cougars out of the field. This year, they look ready to take the next step.

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier returns alongside leading rusher LJ Martin after a 1,300-yard season. BYU also retained much of its production on both sides of the ball while adding key transfer portal pieces like linebacker Cade Uluave and tight end Walker Lyons.

Just as important, the Cougars benefit from a favorable schedule. Outside of a major matchup against Notre Dame, BYU has a realistic path toward a playoff berth.

Pivotal Games

  • vs Notre Dame

  • At Utah

4. Miami (FL)

Miami enters the season coming off a deep playoff run and retains several key offensive contributors, including Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher.

Although the Hurricanes lost major production during the offseason, they addressed several needs through recruiting and the transfer portal. Quarterback Darian Mensah reunites with former number one receiver while at Duke, Cooper Barkat. Miami also added elite talent in a recruiting class highlighted by five-star offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell.

The schedule also works heavily in Miami’s favor. If the Hurricanes play to their potential, they should have a strong opportunity to secure a top-four seed.

Pivotal Games

  • At Notre Dame

5. Georgia

Georgia remains one of the premier programs in college football. The Bulldogs return quarterback Gunnar Stockton along with much of a defense that should once again rank among the nation’s best.

Georgia also strengthened its secondary through the portal and added another elite recruiting class led by five-star defensive lineman Valdin Sone. The roster depth across the board is championship caliber.

The Bulldogs face a difficult SEC schedule, but if they can survive road trips to Alabama and Ole Miss, an undefeated regular season is very realistic.

Pivotal Games

  • At Alabama

  • At Ole Miss

6. Oregon

Oregon has all the pieces needed to compete for a national championship. The Ducks return most of their starting lineup, including quarterback Dante Moore and standout defensive linemen Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti.

Young stars like Dakarian Moore, Dierre Hill, Jordan Davison, and Brandon Finney Jr. could elevate this roster even further, while transfer additions Aaron Scott Jr. and Koi Perich strengthen the secondary.

The Ducks did lose several key contributors, including Kenyon Sadiq, Dillon Thieneman, and multiple offensive linemen, but the overall talent level remains elite. A difficult conference schedule may cost Oregon a few spots in the rankings, but this team should still be firmly in the national title conversation.

Pivotal Games

  • At USC

  • At Ohio State

7. LSU

LSU became one of the biggest offseason storylines after Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss to take over the Tigers program. That move sparked a complete roster overhaul built heavily through the transfer portal.

The Tigers added over 40 transfers, including quarterback Sam Leavitt, offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, and edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen. LSU now has one of the most talented rosters in the country on paper.

The biggest question surrounding LSU is whether Kiffin can finally translate elite talent into playoff success. The schedule will also be brutal, but the Tigers absolutely have the upside to make a championship run.

Pivotal Games

  • At Ole Miss

  • vs Alabama

  • vs Texas

8. Notre Dame

Notre Dame narrowly missed the playoff last season and enters this year with another highly talented roster.

Quarterback CJ Carr returns alongside much of the Fighting Irish defense, perimeter talent, and front seven. However, replacing star running backs Jeremiah Love and Jadarian Price will be a major challenge.

Notre Dame compensated by adding talent through both recruiting and the portal, including highly regarded recruits Rodney Dunham and Khary Adams. The Irish should once again compete for a playoff spot, but difficult games against Miami and BYU will likely define their season.

Pivotal Games

  • vs Miami

  • At BYU

9. Texas

Texas remains one of the most dangerous teams in the country behind quarterback Arch Manning, who is expected to take another major step forward this season.

The Longhorns retained key offensive pieces like Ryan Wingo while also adding more explosiveness through recruiting. Defensively, Texas lost several important contributors, including Anthony Hill Jr., Malik Muhammad, and Michael Taaffe, but once again replenished the roster with elite recruiting classes.

The biggest obstacle for Texas is its schedule. Matchups against Ohio State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, LSU, and Texas A&M create one of the toughest paths in the country. Even so, the Longhorns have enough talent to earn another playoff appearance.

  • At Texas A&M

10. Texas Tech

Texas Tech enters the season with major questions, but also major upside.

The Red Raiders lost several key contributors, including Behren Morton, David Bailey, Lee Hunter, and Jacob Rodriguez. To replace them, Texas Tech aggressively attacked the portal by adding Trey White, Austin Romaine, Mateen Ibirogba, and Adam Trick.

The biggest storyline is quarterback Brendan Sorsby. His availability remains uncertain, which could dramatically impact the offense.

Fortunately for Texas Tech, the schedule is manageable enough that the Red Raiders could still remain in playoff contention deep into the season.

Pivotal Games

  • vs Houston

11. Houston

Houston could quietly become one of the biggest surprises in college football this season.

Quarterback Connor Weigman returns alongside leading receiver Amare Thomas and eight returning defensive starters. The Cougars also added former Tulane standout Makhi Hughes, who could become one of the most impactful transfer running backs in the country.

Houston’s schedule is favorable enough that a strong regular season record could put them directly into the playoff conversation.

Pivotal Games

  • At Texas Tech

  • At Utah

12. Memphis

The battle for the Group of Five automatic bid should be extremely competitive, but Memphis may have the highest upside of the group.

The Tigers completely rebuilt their roster through the transfer portal, bringing in quarterbacks Marcus Stokes and Air Noland along with several other talented additions. While the lack of returning starters creates uncertainty, Memphis has enough athleticism and upside to compete with any Group of Five team in the country.

If the Tigers can survive key road games against UNLV, Boise State, Tulane, and USF, they could secure the final playoff spot.

Bubble Teams

  • Alabama

  • Ole Miss

  • Penn State

The playoff race should once again be chaotic. One upset could completely reshape the national picture. Still, these 12 teams currently look like the contenders heading into the 2026 season.
